The events and characters contained in these stories are mysterious, unusual, sometimes tragic, sometimes comedic and sometimes both. According to Flannery O'Connor, "every writer, when he speaks of his own approach to fiction, hopes to show that, in some crucial and deep sense, he is a realist". All writers are in search of some truth or meaning; O'Connor argues the grotesque calls attention to mystery of life. Though the events which take place within each story in this collection are mysterious, unusual, even impossible, each seeks for a truth and understanding of the conformity demanded of the female body within today's culture. The grotesque within each of the following stories facilitates feminist discourse on the body whether discussing aging or standards for beauty. Each story features mysterious events occurring through some act upon or through the female body. Though these stories may stretch the boundaries of physics and believability, they seek to illuminate a female reality. Stephen King has argued that horror fiction is cathartic since audiences recognize their own demons within the author's world. The stories here are meant to speak to experiences and feelings universal to women.
